About the shop - We truly believe visiting our shop should be an experience, not just a shopping trip. We are happy to answer any questions, sample any of our cheeses, and find the perfect pairing for any wine, cured meat, fruit or whatever else you have in mind!
Unlike many stores that just put cheese on a shelf and sell it, we actually take the time to learn about and care for each of our cheeses. You won't find vacuum wrapped chunks or old, stale pieces in our shop- everything is cut to order and wrapped in French-made cheese paper to ensure you are receiving the highest quality product.
We stock anywhere from 75 to 100 or more cheeses at any one time, from all around Maine, the US and Europe. Our stock changes on a weekly basis, with cheeses coming and going with the seasons and our customer’s requests.
We also carry over 250 different labels of wine, focusing on unique & small, family run operations. Our focus is on Old World wines from France, Spain & Italy- though we do carry a selection from other regions as well.
Our biggest decider in picking what products to carry is quality. We want to be proud of the products we sell, and feel like each is something that we’d serve to our own friends and family. We personally try every cheese, wine, chocolate and everything else in the shop- nothing goes on our shelves before we approved it. As a result, we can not only be sure of the quality, but we can make suggestions based on real experience.
In addition to cheese and wine, we also carry a large selection of cured meats (Prosciutto di Parma, Speck, Pancetta, etc.), craft chocolate, crackers and spreads, and much more.
About Us - The plan to open a cheese shop is not one that we had long planned, but rather an indirect path that we followed over the years.
Back when we first met in Portland, in 2007, my wife Natalia and I found that a couple pieces of cheese, a bottle of wine and a DVD made for the perfect, inexpensive date night. We didn't know anything about cheese at the time, other than that we loved eating it!
Over the years, we worked in numerous fields, but we always loved cooking and eating great food. We also are very fond of travelling. One thing we noticed when travelling around other cities in the US and Quebec was that they often had some great little shops to buy cheese from knowledgeable mongers.
So, when we decided the 9-5 office routine wasn’t for us, the wild idea for a cheese shop is what came to mind.
Belfast was on our short list, as we had visited the town numerous times before, and actually spent our first anniversary here years earlier.
In 2012, we took the plunge, scraped together a little bit of money to buy a used deli case and a cheese wire, and opened our doors! The name of the shop started as a joke, as we were struggling to find something that fit, but we knew what we wanted people to do- Eat More Cheese!
We started in a tiny space tucked behind an art gallery, but thanks to a lot of hard work, some good fortune, and our great customers (whom we are so appreciative of!), we were able to open up in our current space in 2013, right on the corner of Belfast’s only streetlight downtown.
Most days, you’ll find us behind the counter cutting, wrapping and helping folks find the perfect cheese for any occasion.
